Seizure and Epilepsy Monitors
Be alerted when your loved one is having a seizure and help give them independence and dignity by cutting down on making physical checks on them.
Epilepsy monitors have been developed to detect seizure activity and transmit the information to others who are able to assist. These epilepsy monitors do not connect directly to the person having seizures but provide an effective solution to epilepsy monitoring and valuable assistance in detecting possible life-threatening situations.
Epilepsy can develop in any person at any age, in fact one in 131 people in the UK has epilepsy and 0.5% to 2% of people will develop epilepsy during their lifetime. While seizures can be easy to diagnose and control for some people, for many others, epilepsy is a lifelong problem that affects them in many different ways. Studies have shown that, overall, about 20% of seizures occur during sleep. Seizures during the night can disrupt sleep, possibly resulting in further problems with memory and concentration the following day. Epileptics and their families/carers often dread the night approaching as they are left wondering whether a severe seizure will occur, how they will cope with it and what injuries may result from it.
A variety of seizure alarms and epilepsy monitors are available to help track and manage activity in a seat or bed. Seizure monitors tend to work by placing a small sensor between the mattress or cushion and box spring to detect movement and sounds. The parent/carer has a seizure alarm in their room. Many seizure monitors can have their sensitivity adjusted. By using a seizure monitor, everyone in the household can get a better night’s sleep and trust the epilepsy monitors to alert them if an epileptic event should occur. In getting improved sleep, this may have the effect of reducing nocturnal seizures making the seizure monitor an important addition to the home. Alvolution has a variety of easy-to-use and install seizure monitor systems and epilepsy monitors available for home use.
